Was thinking about, in the future maybe, having an excursion in costa rica and there's almost no way to have an automatic trans in a truck that size in those mountains.
This has been done previously, using a 6 speed F250/350 style transmission. It is a lot of work and owning a 6 speed truck presently I must say the V10 produces much better power in the manual config then the 4R100 auto set up.

Why? I don't get it? Low range if necessary, downshifting, etc. I think the only thing a stick might be good for is loading hay bales by yourself.
Serious towing, maximum gear ratio range and longivity are 3 reasons I can think of. The new 5 speed auto added in 05 to the V10's is a very welcome improvement and long overdue. The 6 speed will flat out tow any 4R100 in mountians anytime, anyplace. Add a manual transfer case and you have a "bullet proof" combination. Now I readily admit, my X is much easier to drive and far more relaxing then my F250, but all factors being equal, I much prefer the F250 for serious work.
Brent, you NEED a manual trans in costa rica, you would burn the brakes out going down one mountain there with switchbacks every 50 to 100 feet, you have to be in first gear downhill for long periods at about 10 - 15 mph, automatics are useless down there, almost all the automatics they have are the manual shift autos which are an excellent trans. Great question! I want a manual so bad! Very interested in having a manual mated up to my 7.3. I just want to know does anyone have a manual Excursion of any kind out there? I cant be that difficult, I would think all the parts are available from Super Dutys. I guess I should just try to maintain the the tranny I got and when it dies on me at about 250k, do a manual swap.
I'm pretty impressed with the slushbox that these come with, but I've driven a pickup and that is nice. I'd be temped to swap, but I'm guessing there might be some differences with the Ex body.
I wonder if it would just be the "manual" flash and it just doesn't look for any info from the tranny. At any rate, it would be very interesting to read about someone making it work.
