had something weird happen to my 97 explorer 4x4 automatic control trac
the other day in the snow about 4 inches not alot I'm crusing about 40 mph on the snow locked in and the dang truck jerk bad like it dropped from 3rd to 2cnd it did this couple more times on the length of the trip, I though maybe I just needed to speed up or down because I was at the shift piont. but now the snow is gone I have noticed that when I decelarate to a stop sign or end of my road, then trany downshifts hard sometimes like it has a shift kit in it
so should I worry or is it a computer thing or tranny going bad
getting ready to have it serviced by ford you know a trany tc fluid change.
You wouldn't by chance have a chip in it would you? My '97 has done this off and off for the last 2 1/2 years ever since I put my Superchip in it. Oftentimes it would soon be followed by my engine dieing. It has always started right back up. Whenever this would happen, I would pull my Superchip and everything would run fine. I would alwas put my chip back in and within a couple of months, it would happen again. The last time it happened, my Explorer would not restart so I pulled my chip out while parked on the side of the road. It started right up after tha and I haven't had a problem since. I sent my chip back to Superchips for a warranty replacement. I think mine was related to my chip and as long as gas prices stay like they are, it will be a while before i put it back in. That should give me plenty of time to see if things act up without my chip.
Unless you or someone else put one in, you don't have a chip. The chip is an external prom that plugs in to the auxillary port on the back of the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). It's the rectangular box that slides in to the top of your firewall. It has a large wire harness that bolts on to the front of it with one bolt in the middle. Once you remove the harness, there is a rubber gasket that is held on with two bolts that holds the PCM in the firewall. Remove the gasket and your PCM will slide right out. If you plan on doing this, be sure you do it with the battery disconnected.
