Hi , I just swapped out engines in my 96 f350 4x4 , it was a 5.8 and I replaced it with a 5.8 out of an 97 f350 2wd, every thing went well til I started it and it wont shift into any gear , its an E4od did I mess up the cable adjustment or am I missing something else? The engine I put in was out ofa standard and I used the engine harness that was on it instead of taking the plenum off to swap harnesses. Any help would be greatly appreciated
It is not an electrical issue as the trans should go both forward and back with no electrics hooked up.
Have you checked the fluid level? Was the torque converter seated properly when the engine was bolted up?

You may have created more work for yourself instead of saving a little. But before jumping the gun and tearing the upper intake off to change the harness pull the codes to see what has been flagged, and if there are all sorts of codes for the engine sensors that confirms that the harness has to be swapped. If you don't get any codes then you have eliminated that as a possibility and the problem is more likely to be something mechanical.. like the TC not seated properly.
Thanks for the help , guys , no codes , and converter was seated , after checking all that stuff found the problem . I feel really dumb right now , but found that the tranfercase was in neutral , when I pulled the origial engine I didnt have the jack holding the trans up and it dropped down in the front letting the transfercase shifter to contact the floor and knocking it into neutral!!
