took two to start

today I went to start my truck and turned the key on, then my little boy came out to get in too. I got out and buckled him in his seat, got back in and tryed to start it. just cranked over with a little smoke. cranked it for about 7-8 sec. no start. shut key off and retried fired right up like normal a turn or two, once it fire I got a huge puff of smoke raw fuel smell. It has done this twice now the other time was back last summer.
all stock, insight gauge and had a new FCIM in Jan.. Batteries tested good last month when I did oil change. I did put on a jug of hot shots with last oil change, 900mi.

I've had the same thing happen too. I'm far from an expert on these 6.0 diesels, so take what I say about with a grain of salt. I think what happened is you had the key on too long and the glow plugs shut off. When you cycled the key again, the glowplugs came on and it started up. Kinda of similar situation when you flood a carbureted gas engine, hence the raw fuel smell.

dont know if it is related or not but after a 20min drive in 80* temps the engine fan came on. the insight showed that the ect was 190 eot was 196 and the trans temp was 157. It came on for about 2 blocks taking the ect to 185 and the eot was down to 190 the trans temp stayed right there at 155-157.
