What is this?

I'm unsure what this is. I've done some searches for external transmission filter as that's my best guess but came up with nothing. Can any of you provide insight. It appears to have leaked from the hose clamps at some point, but does not appear to have an active leak now. Figure if it's a filter at 109,000 it's probably time to change it?

Thanks

I thought that too, but it is a genuine Ford part. Also, it's located on the passenger's side front right behind the radiator. This photo is taken from under the truck looking up.

Looks like someone installed an external Ford tranny filter in a truck that didn't have one planned for it.....and it's leaking!

That's what I was thinking it was too. How does the factory install differ, is there a factory hose assembly that should be installed that would eliminate the "jackleg" hose clamp install?

I guess I could just bring it to the dealer and have a transmission fluid flush and let them deal with it. The previous owner had it flushed at the dealer at about 80,000 so I'm guessing they installed the thing in the first place!

Check to see if the tranny was ever replaced before you bought the truck. Many times, when a tranny is replaced at a Ford dealer, they will install an inline filter. IIRC, they come in the box the tranny comes in.

No new transmission have all the service information done by the previous owner from the Oasis report.

Believe it or not, found a guy on Craig's List selling a full set (3) Workshop Manuals with wiring diagrams, for 2001 EX, & F 250, 350, 450 & 550 got them for $30! On page 307-01-146 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission is the answer "NOTE: If the vehicle was not equipped with a fluid filter, install a fluid filter service kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA)" And yes, the kit is just a couple of sections of hose, hose clamps and the filter. The filter only part number is XC3Z-7B155-AB.

It's an aftermarket filter. I use them all the time. Made for auto trans and power steering.

That must be the OEM for Ford as they look identical. This one is a Ford OE part, though it's my guess is was added by the dealer at some point.
