Ok, everyone, here's the deal. I have the 300 (4.9) almost ready to go into the Bronco. But I'm sitting here wondering about clutch options. I'm putting an S5-42 (wide ratio) behind it and I'm toying with the idea of buying a new flywheel to accept the 11" clutch. (None of the flywheels my brother and I have floating around have the holes for the 11" clutch tapped. They are all drilled through.) I'm putting a new clutch in it no matter what I do. What is your opinion as to the need for the 11" clutch over the 10"?
Second question... Anyone have a brand/manufacturer they prefer when replacing a clutch? I know there are many out there I'm just curious since I've never had a manual in any of my Broncos until now.
Remember guys/gals, I'm not afraid to spend the money if it gets the job done the RIGHT way the FIRST time. I loathe doing things twice.
I just got my 300 back in my Bronco (rear main, oil pan gasket, freeze plugs, timing cover, sleeves on front and rear of crankshaft).
the standard tranny freaked me out. to me it was much harder than an install with a converter and flexplate. bolting the flywheel and clutch wasn't a big deal but not knowing where the splines were and worrying that something was in a bind bothered me a lot. Its just something I haven't gotten the hang of.
its just an opinion but I can't see that an 11" would make any difference. I didn't even bother to see what I had when it was out.
I can offer this advice after my little struggle: clean the splines, male and female. I put anti seize on the input shaft so I wouldn't have to yank the tranny when I pull it out later but I really should have gotten after those splines with a wire wheel or something and cleaned em up to make the stabbing easier.
Infrequent towing but when I do, its heavy. The idea is to have something quite capable off the beaten path (I have an LS for the front and an E-locker for the rear) as I do like to play but hate getting stuck.
