so i replaced my axle seal a few weeks ago because it was leaking i pretty positive i did everything correct, but now after my 800 mile trip back to you utah it has started leaking again. so i will be replacing it tomorrow and ill do the fluid in the axle this time too. so what weight is the axle fluid that i need? and can someone show or tell me where the breather hole or whatever it is on the axle is that is know to get clogged? i have the 10.25
The breather tube comes off the hollow bolt that holds the brake hose to the rear axle. On my cab and chassis, it runs straight up to the frame and has a fancy cap.
I didn't know they were commonly clogged.
But I do know that when I took the brake hose off my Dana 70u (when I put the 10.25 in my truck), I had to chisel out hard-packed dirt/grease from that hollow bolt. So I guess it's the same idea with the 10.25 getting clogged.
I drained mine, scraped the mating gasket surfaces, laid a bead of RTV, bolted the cover on tight, and filled it up with standard 80w-90 Gear Oil.
There are only 2 gear oils that I know of at the parts stores. 80w-90 and 75w-140.
Capacity? I don't know...I was using older semi-full/semi-used bottles left over from other jobs...
On my F250, the dealer changed the axle seals 3 times on warranty as they always leaked.
I told them what it was the first time. Check the vent... nope, they liked better changing seals. The 3rd time, I stood right next to them in the dealers garage and watched them do it. And I made damn sure they looked at the vent, sure enough it was clogged.
Never had a single leak from both axles on the truck since then! Seals have over 300k miles on them! Axle seals leak shouldn't happen, it's all about venting. As long as the axle can vent, they last for ever! Very very rare you'll see a seal leak that has had a good vent.
That's one thing not alot of people know, and even less check. I'd check mine once a year (after each winter), I'd remove the rubber hose off the axle, clean it up, check the cap, and re-install.
sweet thanks guys! and John do you know if i unplug the vent if it is plugged will it stop the leak or do i need to replace it sense it already caused it to leak

Dad
My rear end is leaking where the drive shaft connects to the differential. On the driver's side axle there is a cut-off rubber hose that looks like a vent. Could that cause the leak I have? I just replaced the oil and seal a few weeks ago. Let me take some pictures before the sun goes down.
