Hey all. This weekend I am going to be picking up a '90 F150 Centurion, with a 351W. Get this, its in great shape, but I am getting it for $800. The only bummer is that the motor is shot. It currently is a 351W, with an AOD tranny.
!. With the 351W, what kind of fuel mileage should I expect
2. Should I just replace the 351W with the '94 FI 460 I have sitting in the backyard?? (yes I know I will need a different tranny, computer etc etc)
3. Maybe put in a stroker roller motor, say 427 CU??
4. Will the stock FI setup be able to support the added fuel requirements of a stroker motor??
the 460 will present quite a few other problems in addition to the transmition bolting up...But since you already have one, that is probably one of your better options if 8mpg city is OK for you. Your front suspension will need to be beafed up, but I have a feeling the D44 will take the added weight just fine as long as the springs are upgraded to compsensate for the droop. You will need new frame mounts. I am trying to remember all what is needed. My friend is doing the swap into his bronco, but with a carbed 460. A stroker 351 is a very nice setup, but are extremely expensive and unpractical unless you have a specific purpose for your truck or more money than time. They will run $5k+ to get the job done right. Actually, depending on how much accessories and wiring you have with the 460, I would either do that, or rebuild the 351 (or buy a prefab such as jasper) and put a little money into it. You can get a 351 to perform extremely well if you plan it from the start for not very much money. A 351 has the ability to perform much better than a stock 460 with even just a few bolt on mods. If you go internal, there is no comparison (except in the torque department were the 460 shines). Keep in mind, Mass Air converison is always highly recommended for internal engine modifications. It is possible with burned chips or even by your own tinkering but the costs are within a couple hundred dollars. And when you have that much invested already, the extra doesn't sound that bad when you don't have to do anything but plug it in and go.
If you go with a remanned 351 DONT go JASPER! MY dad was a warranty dealer for them about 10 years ago, he said for every 10 he'd replace, 7 would be back before 30k miles. I would go with a MARSHALL remanned motor, much better quality, a little more expensive tho. Steve83 has a 351w MAF out of a bronco that he wants to sell you can PM or EMAIL him.
Wow, I had not known that about Jasper. I had thought they were one of the better ones!! Anyway, watch out if you go with that 351. Since it is mass air, it will also be OBD-II. I personally wouldn't even come close to one of those setups since you are wired for OBD-I. There is a big difference. Finding a "good" used OBD-I 351's are harder than one might think. I was there for 6 months and keep finding all the MAF-OBDII engines!!
