Don't really know which is best, but I have tekonsha. It does plug in there (not the plug below the steering wheel it is to the right of that one). If I remember correctly the wiring color is a little different, but it is not hard. You definitely want one that adjusts easily if u pull different trailers from time to time.

I use a drawtite.
It plugs in under the dash, is adjustable and is for multiple brake axles.
My gooseneck plate and ball is also a drawtite rated at 36,000 lbs.

I have the Tekonsha P3 in my truck. I got it NIB on Craigslist for $50. It's awful fancy but it does its job well.

I also have a Tekonsha Prodigy 2, the best for the money. If you purchase the wiring plug ( about $15.00 ) it will plug into the plug on our trucks.

I also have Tekonsha P2... It works great for pulling my 5th wheel (18,000 lbs dry) and also for my little 16ft flatbed trailer. I agree you should be looking for one that easily switches the gains. Tekonsha now has the P3 and the Primus iQ... not sure if they are better than the P2 for your applications. Good luck with your purchase.

I have a Teknosha P3. Used to have a Drraw tite controller and a Reese tow power. The P3 is really nice and allows also to see brake voltage, current, vehicle voltage and stoplight voltage. It also tells if there is a fault. Nice to see and a decent price.

I came across a hopkins reliance on bought it and it pluged right in it some how can tell if a trailer is not conected, if there is a short, and some other things it does to. Come to find out the brakes on the trailer dont work so thats a project for a rainy day.

I bought the p3 last week and I love it so far. Love the troubleshooting ability. Like today when it said Warning! NO BRAKES! output line short. Ended up finding a wire came unconnected in my 7 way plug. It's already worth it.

I got it on sale at adventurerv.net for 115 bucks!
