ive got an 03 f -250 4x4 no smoke yet, minor loss of coolant eot 220 ect 198 running at 65 mph ambient temp 85 with a/c on eot 232 ect 207 cant come up w/ more than $1500 shop wants $950 labor if i bring my own kit, coolant, and oil simply cant afford it might have to sell truck at a loss.
Do a search on this forum there are a couple of threads explaining how to do this yourself. It can be done with basic hand tools as long as you are somewhat mechanically inclined. I wouldnt pay $950 for something that can be done in my driveway.
I just did mine its not that bad if you have a little bit of experience now it took me 4 weeks to do it but i take my time. The oil cooler cooler kit and whats other parts 300 or under. The egr cooler is probaly good they are fullproof, try it don't sell it
i currently reside in lubbock,tx. this is my first diesel truck. i'm a driiler in the oilfield so the only diesel knowledge i have is from working on cat and detroit skid mount motors lot easier to work on considering everything is open.
bring it to me and i can do it in a day. not hard at all. just buy the parts. the hardest part is taking the intake out. and yea those egr coolers are good from what i hear.
about 12 hrs over two days, egr cooler was fine and still is. done in my driveway with hand tools. Mine is an 03 motor so the same as yours. The instructions and parts lists are here, search for them.
do some research and reading until you are comfortable with the procedures. Break the job into smaller steps to help, remove the turbo, remove intake, remove cooler. Looked at as three different procedures it is not so hard and easier to get around in your head.
You can do this if you have some knowledge and basic tools.
Oh ya not parts were not that expensive at all about $500.00.
Has your cooler failed, do you have oil in coolant?
Sorry but have to say. I learned a long time ago to check what you make per hour working and what you pay for work being done for you. If you make more per hour or even close pay someone else to do the job. If I have to spend 12 hours on a repair job at my per hour rate that pretty much means I should pay a pro to do the job. Not just for the money but also means it should be done right. Hope I didnt offend anyone just somethiing to think about.

i really like this analogy. i am very handy and can do lots of things but there are some things i know better than to try to do alone. fortunatly i have a few grease monkey friends that do this for a living. sometimes i do it myself, sometimes i help sometimes i just say how much will you charge to do it for me. all depends on the job.
i did a head swap on my corvette with my buddy in my driveway in 8 hours. it was easy with him there because he can do it with one hand behind his back. he did one side and i did the other but i had him there to coach me when needed.
i paid to have my oil cooler, head gaskets and studs done.
i swapped my calipers on the vette for powder coated ones and did drilled/slotted rotors at the same time without help.
i paid someone to do the brakes on the truck simply beacsue its so big and heavy and could be done on a lift.
i did 98% of the work on my 77cj5
my same buddy helped re do the front axles seals and all NEW brakes simply because he can do this stuff with his eyes closed.
but the 4 inch lift, locker, snorkel(home made),waterproofing the engine/tranny,adding dedicated grounds to everything under the hood and all of the tune up stuff when i bought it i did alone in my driveway.
look at the tech ffolders and read what needs to be done. that will will give you an indication whether you think its doable by yourself.
then there is the option of taking offers from people like rdunagan who offered to do it. thats how i meet my buddy who helped with the jeep. it started in 03 when i did a blower swap on my 03 cobra. i did the whole job alone but couldnt get one injector to stop leaking. he replied to a thread and within an hour he was at my house helping. we have become very good friends in the last 8 years and he is my go to guy when i have a tech question.
btw unless you want to spen 50k for a new truck (you cannot buy a new diesel 4x4 crew cab for less) just fix the one you have!
thats good you have more time to get ready
I have some pdf files for this that was sent to me from bismic
I can email to you if you want pm me your email
Needtolearn i would not worry about the EGR cooler if yours is the round one which you have 03 so round, they are just like the BP ones haves tubes inside, very few faillurs
