Rust Removal
Rust Removal
I've been looking into how I'm gonna tackle the rust on my 72 Lemans project. My plan is to work on the frame and suspension parts this summer. All surface rust with no holes or rot. I can get them sand blasted pretty cheap. A friend had his 55 Studebaker frame done by some Mennonites for I believe $75. I've also been looking at different rust inhibitors like por15 and rust bullet. This seem to be an easy way out, but they seem to be almost too easy. I'm a little suspicious about them. And finally there's the chemical rust removers. Sand blasting sounds like the way to go. But the others I could do in my garage or driveway. Ive read reviews on the different rust inhibitors and rust removers. But if you read long enough you find good and bad reviews for everything. I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences with any of these methods so I can make up my mind. Thanks in advance.
For body sheetmetal I would get the surface as clean as possible by careful sandblasting, or better media blasting, and then go over it with Picklex 20. You can then paint over it with an epoxy primer that doesn't have acid in it. Since I use PPG DPLF I am fine. Highly recommended by many and I have no reason to doubt as I use it.
For the frame I happen to use, when needed, Eastwoods Rust Converter after removing as much as possible. Since my environment is mild I then coat that with Eastwoods Extreme Chassis Satin Black and am good to go. I rarely use their Rust Encapsulator except on the Hornet.

I'm a little confused after looking at Eastwood's website. I looked at their rust converter and their rust encapsulator. Either one can be applied over rust, but it says for best results use the converter, then put the encapsulator over it. Wouldn't just one or the other work by itself?
