My son's 1984 F150 with 4.9L and full feedback system is pinging. The truck has a manual transmission. It is worse on a warm or hot day and occurs when the engine is placed under a moderate to heavy load. Use of 89 octane fuel helps, but does not stop the pinging. I have used fuel from different stations.
The timing is correct [10 degrees BTDC] and the truck runs great, starts right up, idles normally and gets good gas mileage. It has 181,800 miles and is still quite original. It has good quality ignition components which have approximately 30K miles on them [plugs, wires, cap and rotor].
It does not ping when the engine is cold, only when the temperature gauge approaches the normal range.
The O2 sensor has not been changed in awhile; neither has the fuel filter. The air filter is clean.
