Going to upgrade the Duraspark I system on my 76 Econoline 351W to the Duraspark II system. Been reading a lot of good info, but still have the following question:
Is the 351W distributor body identical between Duraspark I and II?
In other words, provided I install all the other nessecary DS II components (module, coil, etc) can I just put a large DS II cap/rotor on my DS I distributor body?
I think the distributors should be the same. To go to the big cap, all you need is the cap and the spacer under it. I have put them on older points distributors. Also, the longer rotor.
Welcome Bronzo. Mike is correct in that all you need to add is the spacer, cap, and rotor. This modification was added to extend the distance between the cap terminals (preventing cap arcing). It was necessary because of the higher voltage coil used in the DS II setup.
Don't forget to re-gap the plugs to .044". _______
I asked a similar question on the FE forum a week or so ago, and got the same answers. What I learned that I did not know is that there is a resistance wire from the ignition switch that will have to be changed to be compatable with the coil. The new coil will have a recommended resistance for the wire, which will be lower than the one now there.
