Trailer disconected message

Just hooked up my trailer today for work and have been having a problem. When I first hooked up before moving all seemed OK, Lights worked signals and brakes lights. Then after pulling out immediately had a disconnect message, as soon as I apply the brakes it changed to trailer connected but brakes don't seem to be working. Then when I take my foot off the brake to accelerate it says trailer disconnected again. Any ideas? I had it out a a couple of weeks ago and had no problems.

Plug on both male and female should be clean, check them, apply just a litle grease if needed.

I had thought of this before hand having read of others having problems. In January I had used contact cleaner and applied dielectric grease to the socket and plugged it in and removed it several times. A question that I do have is would a dead trailer battery cause it to act this way?

It might. So your battery for the trailer is dead?

Make sure you have a good ground too....I insure you do, leave RV plugged in and lift it off the hitch. Check that all lighting works. If lights work, have someone sit in cab while you wiggle plug (and wire to RV) to see if the error light comes on.

Charge or replace the RV battery and check as above again. You should be able to find something from doing the above.

Don't know if the battery is dead or not. I will have to get out my tester. Was just thinking out loud to see if it was a possibility. I will also check the ground as suggested and post back with the results.

I have a similar problem involving my landscaping trailer w/electric brakes. At first the trailer disconnected sometimes on my dash when I press on the brakes. Now it brake controller does not actuate the trailer brakes,(turn signal/brake/running lights work). I replaced the 7 pin plug so it is not the plug on the trailer. How do I trouble shoot this problem. Should I have power to the 7 pin outlet on my truck with the brakes depressed? Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction on troubleshooting this problem.

Have you looked in the Tech Folder in the top of the thread? This may help: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...l-battery.html

First thing to check is to see if your ground pin (see the pin-out in the link above) is actually connected to your trailer or are you using the tow-pin as the ground for the trailer. NOT GOOD to use the tow pin as a ground!

Well I played with the trailer today. I started by plugging it in with out it hitched. All the lights worked but I had no turn or stop lights. The battery tested fine on the trailer. wiggled the plug and unplugged it several times and got everything to work. It seems some of the pins were not making good contact. I cleaned and adjusted the pins and re greased it. Took it to the job and back about 30 miles and no problems FIXED. Thanks for the help and suggestions they were great.

just for your own info, I had the same problem with my TT and it was intermittent. I tried everything listed in this thread and it still would come and go. I eventually lost all brakes on the trailer, turned out to be a shorted wire in one of the axle tubes. I was on holidays at the time and we disconnected that axle and everything worked fine. Got home and replaced wiring in that tube.
