So why exactly does the 5.4 get such horrible mileage? is it emissions crap? or is it starved for air? is it low compression? Or is it that its just a smaller engine in a heavy truck?
I don't understand why you guys keep thinking that your truck's are getting bad gas mileage. If you want 20 mpg then go buy a Lincoln town car. You're not going to get 15 or more average with a full sized truck unless its a diesel. Accept it guys...use your truck for what it is. And if you want to complain about not having power, go drive a 6.2 Chevy diesel. Trust me I know because that's what I drove/hauled with for 5 years before I finally returned to the ford family with my truck.
I do agree that the v-10 is a conundrum that it does almost as well mpg as the 5.4, but does have a little bit more power. I was looking for a v10 but came across my 5.4 at a price that I couldn't pass up. I guess that I just don't understand why people are so disappointed that there full size 3/4 and 1 ton trucks only average 13 mpg. With a gas truck I am always happy to get 10 mpg....guess that I'm just used to my dads 86 ford f250 with a 351/c6. I was amazed when I got over 14! Oh well, just matter of opinion I guess.
I guess i was expecting too much when i bought it, i had a friend with about 30 super dutys some being 5.4s tell me i should get about 16-18mpg on the highway. i had no idea so that seemed reasonable, but whatever. its too late now
The difference between a V10 getting 13 and a V8 getting 15 is 15 %. That is not insignificant.
I consistently get 16 on the highway out if my E350 and I'm sure I could get 17 if it didn't have All Terrain tires. I only drive 60-65 on the highway. City driving it gets 11.5,
