I have 2 questions hope some of you might be able to shed some light on. First one is does anyone know if the torque converter has a drain plug in it. I was looking under the vehicle the other day and seen that a rubber plug was on the bottom of the bell housing but didn't take the time to pull it and spin the torque converter to see if it had a plug. Next one is a little more indepth, vehicle has about 5k on it and it's loosing about 2 quarts of trannie fluid every 2-3 weeks. Looked under the vehicle and can't find any leaks, I did find a little moisture on the undercarriage and thought it might be a shaft seal leaking. Took it to the dealer and they can't find anything, they put dye in the trannie but still no luck. I have the truck back and will take it back to them in a week or sooner if I notice the fluid level is decreasing. I've been working on vehicles for 25 years and I'm stumped on this one. Any info would be greatly appreciated so I can get with the dealer on it. Sorry for the long thread. Thanks in advance
Yes your torque convertor should have a drain plug. Pull the rubber plug and turn the engine over til you find it.
If the transmission isn't leaking externally there are only 2 other places the fluid can go...either into the radiator through the cooler or into the transfer case through the front input seal.
Let us know what you find
Have checked the coolant and didn't notice any evidence of trannie fluid in it. but didn't think about the transfer case. I just came back in from pulling the servicing plug on the transfer case and a little over 3 quarts came flowing out which pretty much accounts for the amount that I've lost from the transmission. I saved the amount that came out the transfer case and going to take it and the truck back to the dealership tomorrow and let them know what I've found. Thanks for the Info Dave you've saved me some headaches going back and forth to the dealer trying to find the problem.
Well after bypassing the service writer and talking to the mechanics I got the problem solved. After pulling the transfer case they found the front input seal had a defect in it. It's back together and so far so good, just have to keep checking the trannie fluid level every week to see if it stays at the same level. Thanks again Dave for you input.
