k so i just bought a 1990 4x4 f150 w/ a 5.0l and the fastest i could go was 60 km/h and the is absolutely no power like just trying to back up i had to use 4lo to move is. the trans fluid smells fine. Oh and it does not like to shift but at bout 60 km/h and bout three grand it lurges like it is trying to shift and go faster and it won't and any steep hill it barely climbs it. i have heard like twenty different things some say it is the engine some say its the torque converter and one person said the tranny's cooked. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Get the axle and trans codes off the decal on the drivers door pillar and post them up.
If the truck has an AOD the TV cable preload adjustment is critical to correct operation, and if the truck has an E4OD any sensor issues will affect transmission operation so you need to pull the codes.
Sounds like it may not be getting enough fuel. We had a boat that would run great until we gave it some power. Then it would bog down and refuse to go any quicker.
A similar thing happened when the rust a junk in the old fuel tank in my truck clogged my fuel filter up. Replaced it and it was good as new
