Hello everyone i have a 1995 f150 4x2 automatic with a 302. The spedo and odometer has quit working and the o/d light on the shifter is blinking. i have found that the #18 fuse is blown and blowes a new one when replaced. i have unpluged the vss on the rear end and it still blows the fuse and the wires at the vss looks good, what else is on the same circuit that i can check and i also noticed a slight smell of burned circuitry somewhere in the cab of the truck. i have looked on the web so i know what vss means but the other short hand people uses confuses me. all help will be greatley appreciated. almost forgot the airbag light used to be on but now it is off <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->
Sounds like you have something shorted in the instrument cluster, is that what fuse #18 supplies? If so you'll have to pull the cluster and have a look.
If yours is the E4OD trans it "could" be a broken wire is shorting where the wires come out of the shift lever (for the OD cancel button) and head down the column.. Mine broke a couple years ago and blew fuses (don't remember which one) trans did all sorts of stupid stuff. I'm thinking it knocked out the odometer and maybe the speedometer, not sure it been too long for my feeble mind to remember for sure.
Finally saw a small puff of smoke when shifting into reverse, traced that down, and there was the broken wire with a black spot on the metal where it had been sparking before blowing the fuse...
It's not hard to get to this spot, just pull the screws out of the column cover (bottom) and pull the two halves out, it will be in plain sight on top of the column, right where shifter lever is mounted..
The OP's symptoms, less the O/D light flashing (manual trans) turned out to be a smoked airbag diagnostic module in my 95. Fuse 18 blew when key was turned to on position, a new one lasted just long enough for the odometer to attempt to initialize. The smell of burnt electronics was very strong on initial failure at 75mph on the interstate and when you plugged in a new fuse and turned the key it came back, especially when the AC came on. Be sitting down when you call the Ford dealer for the cost on a new one.....................
