Distributor advance
Any perferances for distributor advance vacum or mechanical? Why would you pick one over the other?

You need both. Mechanical advance advances the timing based on RPM; vacuum advance advances the timing based on load. The factory distributor employs both.

What if you are going to a new aftermarket distributor, why would you pick a non vacum advance over vacum?

Its for race/higher hp motors typically those that run nitrous or or lots of boost.
I am not sure how they work with it totally, but I have seen my friend set his 250 shot of nitrous up that way based on a book, and expert advice.
On a street motor you will give up power as you accelerate, and probily loose a good chunk of mpg's.

^^^ What he said. If this is a street-driven engine, vacuum advance is absolutely necessary.
