i got a older pull behind camper that is in dire need of new tires, they are cracked so bad i cant believe they didnt blow out on my way home(only 2mi and top speed of about 30) from what i can tell they are 7.75-15 what size does that equal to? i think i can get away with a "p" rated tire because the max gvw is 6,000lbs and it is a dual axle.
with a dual axle you might still want to get trailer tires. They will be a little more ready to take the wear involved in turns. Passenger tires are sometimes made with softer compounds which will wear faster and make sharp turns more difficult.
Please do not get p tires if you are going to be towing on the same roads as me... At the very least get LT. You need the sidweall strength on a trailer.
About a year ago I put tires on my 5er. It had the old 7.75 15's on there. I put Maxxis 225 70 r15's and they are an ST rated radial with E load range. I have pulled it over 6k miles, fully loaded and so far no problems. Discount tire had the best price at the time.
Many people put LT's on their trailers and I believe if you are going to pull it over 65 mph, that is the far better choice. ST rated tires are rated at 65 mph.
Yeah you'll want tires made for trailers. They are designed with thicker sidewalls and are made to withstand or take higher pressures for better stability under tow and will not bruise when turning etc...etc...and besides...if you run any tires on your trailer that are not designed for trailers and you have a problem...ie...a blowout or something and you cause a death or property damage you could be cited and sued, much less if your insurance company finds out...they won't pay...
I have LT tires on my 5'er because that's how it came from the factory, my understanding is that ST tires are not better then LT's on trailers except the speed issue.
