So my Wifes 02 Escape keeps leaking oil onto the exhast and she keeps complaining about the smell. There is never any oil on the ground. I got underneath and cannot pinpoint where it is coming from but it is not high on the motor. I tried tightening all the pan bolts and was afraid to tighten much without stripping. After it continued I decided to try some Lucas Oil stop leak. I have heard that it works. So I put it in and in my stupidity forgot to put the oil cap back on. She drives to work and calls me and says it is worse and she actually sees smoke coming from grill. So that evening when she gets home I discover about 1/4 of a quart of hot oil covers everything under the hood. For awhile I was scared it might catch fire. Serious smoke!!
So learn from my mistake, put the oil cap back on. Two cans of degreaser later I got 90% of it off. Boy do I feel stupid!!!!
its amazing how much a 1/4 quart will cover when its hot!!
I changed the oil in my '87 Ranger once and left the cap off. Didn't realize it until a couple weeks later when I checked the oil and found the cap sitting on top of the intake. It was apparently held in place by the insulation under the hood. The mess wasn't bad though.
To this day any time I change oil I go back several times to make sure the cap is on correctly....
