Has anyone noticed or heard about the axle spindle seals coming completely out from the space? I was doing a level on my truck tonight and while I had it all down I noticed the seal was just setting on the spindle completely separated away from the axle. I thought ok bad seal or just popped out but what where the chances that the same seal opposite side was the same? Pretty good I guess because it was! That’s the part I thought was a bit odd. I tried popping it back in place but a half of it kept pushing all the way through to the inside. Do I need a press or tool for these or just alot of patients? Any help would be great. They are calling for a lot of rain in the next few days and any (or any more) water and dirt wouldn’t be to healthy.
by the way it is a 2010 F350 4X4
Mine have done the same thing on my 08, I just cut them off because if I replace them they will just fail again. They are just the dust seals.
+1
These are meant to keep gross contaminants out of the axle tube and lengthen the life of the inner seal, which contains the gear oil.
If your not running in deep mud all the time you will be fine.
That seal came off on the 08 that I owned...it keeps dirt and water from going into the axel housing. I was told that this part was redesigned and I could elect to have the dealership replace it at my cost. I took brake cleaner and cleaned the area real good, I then used Lock-tight adhesive.....This product was new to me,,,sometype of glue. I used Tyvek tape to hold the seal in place to let the Lock-tight glue to dry real good. I never had a problem....it worked well....I saved just under $ 800.00 this was a est...on having both seals replaced, using the new redesigned part. Keep us posted on how you resolve this problem....
I pulled in one of our shop trucks tonight and looked at it. Its a 09 and same thing w those. I understand what ur sayin Ricohman but it jus seems like a poor or faulty design if they are jus setting on the axle like that. I like the idea of them being secured inside there. But that's their design though? To jus set there and wabble and partialy keep mud and grit out? Odd. also odd to pay 800 bucks to have them replaced for the new one! Good lord that's a bit much isn't it?
I can understand the concerns about the est cost to replace both seals...but there is some amount of work involved. When your going to do the job....there will be other seals that you will need to replace as well ....because you will have to remove them just to get the part that your replacing. I think most of the est ...was labor, if the repair was easy, I would have tried doing it myself.....but instead I found a way to just reattach the dust cover to the seal ...Which worked real well...a real good easy fix. The new seal do not have the outer dust cover ring.....it's a rubber ring that the axel slides through.....
