New stereo looking for reverse

Hi, I have a 2006 expy and I'm installing a nav stereo. It needs reverse. I want to avoid running it from the tail lights and get it in the dash. I have the HD tow package. By my driver's right knee I have two connectors that I have not used. I imagine one of them is for towing. Went looking for 12v in reverse on those pins but no luck. Where
should I be looking?

Thanks

most of the places I have seen state that it is black/pink and should be in the drivers kick panel. I have not verified but will be trying to find the time to verify this weekend as well. Please post back if you confirm it, otherwise, hopefully I will have time to get my reverse hooked up to the stereo and do my camera this weekend as well. Not sure though, such a PIA to pull the deck on these. Hope this helps, Mike

Maybe I'm not understanding what the driver's kick panel is? What do you suppose it is? I figured it's that little black panel by the driver's right foot, but I'm not sure.

I didn't find pulling out the factory stereo was hard. It took me about 15 minutes from start to finish to get the dash panel off, and remove the factory deck. There's two screws going up into the top of the instrument cluster. Remove those, and the gradually pull the dash trim piece off. Lots of clips to pop out. Disconnect all the harnesses. Some were tricky.

kick panel is down by your left foot. I have not checked yet, but there will be a harness in there. As far as difficulty on the deck pull, I am used to my old F150 where you just grabbed the dash panel and pulled it right out. The Expy only had those two screws, drop it in to first and then unplug all of the plus (I think there was five including the 4wd switch). I looked really quickly at mine and the harness is definitely up there in the kick panel (where your left foot would be) - but not sure if I will have the time to get in it further this weekend. Hope this helps, Mike.

Greg - did you get yours done?. I put my camera in today and am trying to find something hot with ignition back by the tailgate (to avoid running power wires all the way back up front. Hopefully I will also get some free time tomorrow to pull the dash and do the wiring up there.
Any pointers from anyone would be good. I was able to get the rca and power plug thru the factory grommet (PIA) back at the tailgate, so there is only about an inch of wire showing. I will try and put a pic up. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah I did finish the job this week actually. The camera was the pain in my ***. I used the reverse lights power for the camera, saving me having to run power all the way to the front (like the rca). Also, it avoids having the power run beside your rca which can cause interference. But I burned out my first camera. I assumed the black wire on the reverse light was ground, and that the black/red was live.... They were reversed. Be warned - test first!

I had to make a tiny notch to run the wire from the license-plate mounted camera into the "plastic horizontal piece with 4 bolts" that's on the tailgate, housing the license lights. I then used the grommet in there as well. How did you avoid making a nibble into that plastic piece?

I found reverse up front as specified here -> in the driver kick panel. I was also able to find the steering wheel remote wire in the primary radio connector to hook up my steering wheel controls to the new stereo.

Works great. Really happy with the setup. Bluetooth works well, nav, radio, and the reverse camera comes on automatically when I engage reverse.

Greg.

okay, judging by what you are saying, you can only use your camera while in reverse then if you caught power back there (would only be powered when the reverse lights are on). I may just end up running power and ground up with the video wire then (should not be any interference hopefully since it is such low voltage). Not sure though, I may try and tap into power back where the third seat controls are. I checked the 12 volt socket back there, but it is always hot. although now that I think of it, i think the seats are always hot also. hopefully will find out tomorrow. I am assuming the reverse was black/pink and I should be able to get it in the drivers kick. will post more tomorrow hopefully. Thanks, Mike

I'm a little curious about something - what do you want your camera for without reverse? Specifically, is it for attaching your hitch? My entry level camera isn't wide angle enough to see the hitch sadly, but it is wide angle. NOTE: I noticed we have the same camera actually. Can you see your hitch from there??

not sure what I can see yet there because I have not powered it up. I only i did a test off of the battery with a handheld monitor to make sure that it works. I do not tow often, but I tow a variety of trailers from boats to utility trailers, would be nice to kick it on for longer trips to make sure nothing has moved around at all. As far as hitching up, hopefully I can use it for that, but I am pretty good at getting under the trailers right now with out it (admittedly bumping gently sometimes). It would mainly only be using it for reverse viewing. I actually may end up just wiring for power in to the reverse lights, but I figure i have to run the video wire anyway - might as well take the power/ground up also. Was the black/pink definitely the reverse wire and in the kick - because I will have to run that over to my headunit also. Thanks, Mike.

My wires were reversed, but I don't think everybody's will be. You really should check yours with a run of the mill tester (lighting type is fine -> test each wire against real ground to see which lights up). I was able to find reverse in the dash for the head unit. No need to bring it to the front.

Mike,

Thought since you're in there you might be able to help me out. I misplaced the two screws that hold in the grab strap on the inside of the tailgate. You probably removed them to do your installation. Any chance you can identify what they are so I can go to home depot and replace them?

Thanks,

Greg.

I'm not sure - does a Torx 27 have a standard threading, diameter, and socket size? I only know Torx 27 as the socket type. Also, any ideas on the length of those things roughly? I seem to remember about 1 inch.
