Windshield replacement

My windshield's been cracked and I am eager to get it changed now...gonna let the glass guy do it for me. Two questions:

-Were shaded windshields original to factory production of 72'? Or should I stay with clear to keep it as original as possible?

-Will I need a new seal to replace the windshield. Currently the one I have is in pretty good shape. It has chrome trim.

You won't need new seal, but it needs sealed. The installer has that.

i wanted to get a new clear one as well to keep it as oem as possible. i just gotta have that little carlite emblem on it. this was hard to come by. and the shop instead was able to get me one that is tinted all over, as well as shaded at the top. i am glad i did it because there is no comparison. it is a totally different world when its hot out and you have that shade!, i am now eager to tint all my windows! i was worried about it being troublesome at nighttime while driving in the rain, then my uncle says "dave, look around, all windshields are tinted these days!"

As original: Clear glass was standard equipment, tinted glass was optional.

It was possible to only order a tinted w/shield, leaving the rest of the glass clear.

The Sun Band w/shield (tinted w/extra tint on top) was available from the aftermarket sector and first offered in the late 1970's.

The w/shields are the same: 1967/79. The w/strips are not the same, and there are two types 1967/72: With stainless steel reveal mouldings, and without.

CAVEAT EMPTOR = Let the buyer beware. If you are tall, you may not want a Sun Band because...seeing thru that extra tint at night or in foggy conditions may be difficult.

I found this out after installing a Sun Band in my 1965 F100.
