Hey, new to the site and figured you all could help me out so I don't get screwed buying a truck. I'm looking to get a F-250 power stroke hopefully from 99-2004, depending on what i can find price wise and milage. My only concern about the 03/04 models is ive heard bad things about the 6.0L engine, should I steer clear of those and look for the older 7.3L engines? I found a nice 02 7.3L with 90k miles on it for $16,700, 4x4 long bed super cab didn't know if that was a decent deal or not. This will be the first truck I've owned so I don't want to end up with a pos.
You will find many 6.0 owners who have had no problems with theirs, but I personally know of three owners who have had to drop about $5,000 into getting theirs fixed within 6 months of purchase (used trucks). In my area most 6.0 owners sell their trucks right around the 100,000 mile mark. One of my co-workers is now the proud owner of a 1995 F350 diesel because his 2003 6.0 went belly up last month.
So, while I can't speak from personal experience, I can tell you about actual people I know who have paid dearly when they gambled on the 6.0 and lost.
As to the price of the truck you are looking at, it seems a bit high for my area, but your market may vary. I do know that the same truck with a 6.0 would be about $3,000 cheaper here.
Well my grandfather has owned a F-250 since I can remember, has probably owned each of the different engines over the past 15 years and i remember he never really had a problem with his 99' 7.3L but when he bought a new one back in 04' i believe with the 6.0L it gave him a lot of trouble. I know of one other guy who had the same problem, I wanted to get a general sense of the problems instead of putting all of my judgement on a couple people's problems.
