I have searched this site and can not find my answer. I had to replace the battery in my 92 F-150 truck. It has a 5.0 and 5 speed tranny. The truck doesn't seem to run quite right now. It has become cold blooded in that cold starts. It does not high idle for any amount of time. I also notice in second and third gear. It is pausing (jerky) when accelerating. The check engine light also comes on sometimes. Shut the truck off and you might not see the c/e light again for a few days.
What I'd like to know is the proper procedure to reset the PCM and EEC modules after reconnecting the battery? Any help would be appreciated.
Basically you just need to drive the truck for a few days for the PCM to relearn. Try to drive it in a few different situations such as stop and go for a while, then highway for a while. Sometimes they take a while to learn, sometimes they learn pretty quick.
If the check engine light was on there should be a trouble code stored in memory. You should get the PCM scanned or you can do it yourself by counting check engine light flashes after grounding the STI wire. Steve83 has instructions for doing that somewhere on here. A search should find them. If you cant find them send Steve a personal message.
Thanks for the reply, Racerguy. I thought the the truck should relearn the settings on its own after some driving. However, I think it is slow to learn or maybe not at all (kind of like its owner) So, nothing special to be done done. I think I will pull the codes from the EEC first and disconnect the battery for awhile. Connect the battery and take it for a run to see what happens.
OK, I pulled the EEC codes for both KOEO and KOER tests. I got 2 demand codes (22 & 14) and no memory codes during the KOEO test. The KOER tect came back good ( code 11).
So, the 14 code is Ignition pickup was erratic - Ignition Systems and code 22 is MAP (vacuum) or BARO signal out of range - MAP.
For the code 14 should I be looking at distributer cap and rotor? I put new plugs and plug wires on her back a year ago. Next would be the code 22. Should I try a new MAP sensor or look for a vacuum leak?
I think the only time I've seen a MAP code was for a MAP that was definately bad. Even with a big vacuum leak you don't normally get a MAP code.
Do you know someone with a similar truck that you could swap MAPs with and try it? That would be a quick and easy thing to try.
As for the ignition code I wish I had a manual here that told me more about it. I seem to recall seeing that code before and just about going nuts trying to fix it. Dont remember the outcome though.
You mentioned that it jerked while accelerating. Could it be something as simple as a misfiring spark plug? Are they getting old? What about the wires? Cap and rotor?
