I recently purchased a 1991 F350 crew cab flatbed. I love this truck, it is all man and no frills. Things I do not love is he fact that it is a 5.8 gas engine and get's about 8 MPG. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to squeeze a couple MPG out of this? I am open to some wild options. Would even consider changing the rear end.
Dang man...I was getting 12 in town. Took it to Nags Head last summer and loaded with 2 adults, 2 adult sized kids and the bed loaded with vacation goodies I averaged 16-17. First leg was early morning and I calculated about 18. After the A/C came on, 15.
thats whats up Kevingnwv. my 92 302 single cab lifted on 33s 3:55 gears gets about 11-12mpg on about 65-70% highway driving... sucking me dry, hopfully my 351w swap and 4:10s will help with that.
my 96 302 extcab 2wd gets about 16-17 depending on how i drive it
i live a few mins from nags head...next time you go you should drive it down corova
Ok, I have been away from the gas engine fro a while. My last 2 trucks were diesel and this one would be too if i could convert it without a lot of trouble. so your saying put a hi flow exhaust system on it, what about a dual exhaust system instead of a y pipe. I probably cant go to 3" from the manifold on a gas like a diesel though. And what is a six liter tuneup?

No you cannot go directly to 3" off the manifolds. But you can use a Bassani y-pipe that uses 2.5" down-pipes directly to a 3" pipe at the junction. That is what I have on my F350. The Bassani is pricey$$ but works well. You can keep the factory manifolds or change them out to shorties. Some people will scoff at them but they do work. Ultimately long tubes and a well made custom exhaust is better.
If you have a 4x4 there are a lot of obstacles to overcome with long tubes and/or a dual exhaust. That is why I like the factory manifolds/shorties and a single exhaust. All the pieces I have are mandrel bent, fit very well.
