along with a FE motor that I posted questions about, we got this transmission ... I know that it is a NEW PROCESS 4spd... presumably out of a 66 F250 4x4.... I posted a pic (with casting numbers) in my album titled TRANSMISSION. Anyone care to help? BIG THANKS IN ADVANCE
OK, if this is a NP435.... that means it has a "granny gear".... is there a way to adapt a regular 4-speed, or possibly a 5-speed to this bellhousing? I am installing an FE in my 56 F100 2WD and would like to use a manual transmission. I just do not want a 6.00 series first gear..never gonna pull anything that heavy.
With a car bell, you can bolt up a Ford toploader 4 speed. First is 2.78 or 2.32, 4th is direct. You used to be able to find them in servicable condition for $500 or so. Not so much these days.
I am not exactly looking for a trans to go drag racing with, but I would hope it would survive some "spirited" driving and I would really hope to have an OD gear, as I will be running either 3.55:1 or 3.73:1 grears in an 8.8" with 20 inch rims and 31 inch tall radials.... TWO WHEEL DRIVE.. but slammed low but drivable without air-ride or Hydros... just a lowered suspension and a channeled body
There are the POS iron-cased toploader overdrive transmissions from the late '70s to mid '80s. Avoid the aluminum cased SROD and similar. First up here:
Just a suggestion--The 352 and 4 speed OD or NP435 combo, or toploader etc, is just going to be a pig. Unless you rebuild the 352 to "1960s" specs with some compression, cam etc, it's going to make noise and eat gas as it's two primary activities, third being move your truck, and way down the list anything "sporting".
The answer, as you've seen countless times and that's probably why you aren't doing it: Mustang 302/5 speed.

Call me silly.
OK.. Silly.
I have no desire to have a small block in this truck. The 352 will likely be replaced down the line with a 390 (or bigger) FE powerplant. I want to keep the truck looking late-60s/early-70s style. It already has a 3-4 inch chop, and a louvered hood.. so thats the way I am going.
The reason for the 352 is simple, I HAVE IT AVAILABLE. We bought a 66 F250 4x4 abandoned project truck for almost nothing, and the 352 came with it... I really do need to check the bore and stroke to be sure of what it is.... if not today, I will check it Sunday.
