I have a 1976 4x4 truck with a 400 and and a C-6. My transmission is bad so I came accross one out of a 1980. Will my transfer case work with this? Thanks
If you found a transmission and t-case off of a 1980 with a 351M or 400 it will fit your engine, but the, outputs could be different (fixed yoke vs. slip yoke) I don't know what was used in 1976 (or even if 400's came in trucks in 76') The 1980 tranny t-case will most likely have slip yokes. The two Iv'e seen did.
All Ford 4x4 trannies will bolt up to all transfer cases used in Fords, any year. But I found out Ford used several different length c6's through the years. So even though it will bolt up, it may put the transfer case in the wrong spot. So make sure it's the correct length before you get it.
Wouldn't a '76 be a divorced case? If so you need a 2wd transmission.
But yeah, you're basically looking for same or similar length. Anything more than an inch or two either way will likely be too much for your driveshaft or slip yoke to take up. Not a big deal to have a shaft shortened though if need be. Also watch for trans mount location and style as well. Worst case you have to move the crossmember a bit or lengthen the holes to allow enough adjustment.
