which tranny to use?

I have a '73 F-100, is in great shape(to be restored). I have a delima right now. This truck has a 302 engine and HAD a T4 tranny (which I have recently found out was used in mustang 2) The tranny burnt up, and I don't have 2000 miles on the clutch. OK, I need some input on what tranny I should replace this old one with. I really don't want to go out and buy different bellhousing, clutch, etc.

Your help is greatly appreciated!!

I would go out and find a NP 435 top loaded 4 speed . Also the T-18 will work . I find that the np435 is a stronger tranny , but I am biased .

I think chas pretty much summed up all your options if you don't want to change bellhousings.

If it were mine, I'd find a T-5 out of a 5.0 and swap it in.

I have 2 '78's both with 300's and 3.31 rears. One has a NP435 and the other has a T18. I kinda like the T18 better, it seems to have a tighter shift, just feels better to drive. Just my personal preference, both are good trans though.
