hey everyone, i been searching these old posts for days now, so much knowledge here. ( been able to answer nearly ALL my questions regarding voltage reg wire routing ect ) i recently acquired a 73 4x4 f 250 and im having a time trying to get the alt to charge correctly. i have a thorough understanding of basic dc electricity, but no matter what i try, it ( multimeter ) only reads 12. 46 at bat wire ( big one to solenoid ) while its running. a small amount higher if revved ( not even 13 volts ) its got a new voltage reg. new batt. new wires , new start solenoid and alt tested good at autozombie. i had a "ford guy " look at it, and he thinks it may have wrong alternator. truck has what im assuming is a ammeter ( no light, just "d" a needle and "c" , always shows right in middle w extreme slight movement to "c" when revved ) now i been turning wrench on chevys all my life, but this fords throwing me for a loop. is it possible its the wrong alternator ? ( purchased from junk yard and tested) a "internal one, instead of the external one i need, right? thanks.
so the one i got was from a 79 f250, ( tested fine ) that would still be considered the "right alt. yea? cuzz if so ill move on to see what else could be wrong why its not charging...thanks, mike ( i have pic of alternator in question in my album, i cant figure out how to post it here )
oh, am i right? at 12.46? just from reading other posts on the subject i thought i was looking for the 13.00s ( voltage ) or perhaps more. ( im takeing the reading from the big wire "batt" on alternator using mullti ) is 12.46 acceptable? or do i got a problem? ( sorry if these questions seem foolish) thanks mike
12.46 is just battery voltage, you should have 13 volts or better, the alternator you bought should be the right one, there is a fusible link in there between the alternator and the solenoid that could and probably is bad, see if you have battery voltage at the big post on your alternator
