Ok so here is one for all the guys with “ranch Hand” style bumpers. I just picked one up and I am wondering is it safe to drill and tap a fitting into it and fill it with air. And if so what would be a saf amount 60-80psi. It would be nice to have something to break lugs on the side of the road or fill a tire. If anyone has done it and have pics or suggestions let me know. Shelton
Thats a really tough Q, not knowing if they hydro or what to rate it at or if they use WPS and test specimins, I would ask the manufacture or hyro it yourself before hand to 100 psi. yep I would hydro myself before hand. With a hydro the danger is minimized. It would be good if you could get some CML's done before the hydro and then you should know where you stand.
Wouldn't it be easier just to have one of those DC air pumps that store behind the seat or are you tryin something different. What would the dangers be if you bumped into someone and it bursted causing fragments to turn into shrapnel. Not sayin its not a cool *** idea, just maybe some points to look at.
I'm no expert but I do work in the high pressure gas industry. Depending on the steel your bumper is made of, it's very unlikely anything happening like exploding shrapnel. Even if you used high carbon steel pipe for your bumper, under 200psi is hardly anything to worry about. As far as your idea to cap your ranch bumper and put an air fitting on. Offroad guys do that all the time, but usually use the rollbar instead.Your biggest problem would be making sure air doesn't bleed out over time. That's not even that big a problem. Just use some soapy water to find leaks like they do for tires.
I wasn't talkin about spontaneous explosions, just if you got in a wreck or something and compromised the weld. Even I know it unlikely to get punctured thru the metal, but stranger things have happened.
I would also think that you would need to weld on a threaded bung for the air connection as the bumper metal is too soft to put a thread into. Any pressure might make the air connector shoot out if you don't.
