My turn!

So I just pulled my chip out to see if it was causing my power issues and when we were heading to church I decide to do a 0-80 run to check the time. So I was slowing to a stop when all of a sudden the brake pedal dropped about 2 inches and the brakes let go for a second and then grabbed again. I looked at Jacquie and said I don't know if I wanna do a run now till I figure out what's going on. At first o thought I blew a powersteering hose but there was no whining and it seemed to stop ok. I found a good stretch and said what the hell and let er have it. 0-60 in 17sec and to 80 in 37sec. Definatley no improvement! So we went to church and this is what I saw-

I thought about it a while back and thought I wouldn't be able to coast as far as I could and there would be some serious heat involved. I guess in a couple days we'll know for sure. Oh and I'm going to change the front rotors and pads while I'm at it!

Hey Bulla. It's kinda funny how many times I see things on here that have recently happened to me! Seems as though these trucks always have the same similar issues. I originally thought it was my front pads that were wore when I started to hear a little grinding and thought I still had a day or so. Much to my surprise, on my way to get my front pads, a day later, I felt a more pronounced drag, then a loud clunk.... then the soft pedal, then the normal pedal. So I bought front and rear pads, just in case. Fast forward to the garage.....your pictures of your rears were exactly what I saw! So a simple, inexpensive pad swap turned into a more expensive 2 new calipers, 2 new rotors, and a set of rear pads. I've always been told its best to change brake issues in pairs or you'll be right back to do the other side shortly. Not sure how true that is, I guess because I've never experimented to find out! And of course since I had the front pad , I changed those as well, even though I still had a little meat on them. Rotors..150. , calipers.. 150. with a 160. core, front & rear pads 80. Telling my wife I'll be gone about an hour or so to change my brakes and getting home 4 hrs later.........PRICELESS! No, I take that back, Trying to explain WHY it took so long was the priceless part! Bill

My truck did the same thing. I had heard it start to grind when I pressed on the brakes. Before I had a chance to fix it, it spit out the pad. It did this on a service call for work. I went to work on a customers tractor and ended up working on my truck in his driveway. Since he gave me a ride to get the parts to fix my truck I talked to my boss and did't charge him for the service call. I had to replace the pads and rotor. One of the caliper slide pins was froze. I had never-seized them before as well.

I was told to give dielectric grease a shot on the slide pins. Anyone else use it?

Dielectric grease on the pins sounds like a good idea.
It's waterproof so it won't melt out of there anytime soon.

i ride quads so when i did my brakes i used Bel-Ray Marine and Automotive waterproof grease on mine. its like 25 bucks for a little tub of it but it has never failed me on my quads running through the mud and water and it has been holding up great on my front brakes. just a heads up on what works for me....

Glad you didn't tear up more then you did. I wish we would have seen this while we were all together. Well, you did get to see how to take the rotors off before you needed to do it.

same thing here, i had just inspected my pads and they had decent thickness, about a week later it shot a pad out on the right rear, my caliper stuck open. i believe it was the inside pad, the outside pad still looked decent. just something to keep in mind, good luck with your repairs.

I think we shoud be asking what brand-name of pads was on each of these trucks to see if there's any common failure trend.
