From my reading, the finned AL rear diff covers are an improvement, and do reduce fluid temps.
I also remember a post back in the day where MK posted the finned trans pans weren't as effective, and not necessary. The trans cooler is much more efficient.
I wonder if the aluminum cover isn't also a cheaper and longer lasting alternative to the stamped steel covers, not to mention more efficient at heat transfer.
I remember the same post about the transmission pan. He gave a good technical explanation and explained all the testing they did about why the trans. pan change was a waste of money AND fluid.
Yes they have syn and an additive if u have limited slip
I doubt the cast covers are cheaper than stamped steel? but the rust issue was probably a big factor in the change
yes adding fins increases surface area and heat transfer, but with the cover being on the back side of the axle, there is limited air flowing over the fins which reduces their effect.
like someone said earlier, i bet it had to do with a maintenance issue, supplier issue, or looks overall.
Is it the same size diff cover on a single rear wheel vehicle as on a dully??
Nae, dually's have Dana 80's. Although I saw somewhere on here about a Trail Boss dually option or something like that.... and that truck has a alum. cover.
They originally had a fair amount of problems with the stamped steel pans and diff. cover rusting through in areas where road salt and other chemicals were used. This could be their way around that. Cheaper to do it at the factory than under warranty at the dealers.
