TDC and Distributor

Truck running? My balancer has slipped on my truck so I just put a long extension on top of the Number 1 piston. Set it top dead center like that (and I make sure it's the compression stroke) then I line up the rotor. Once it's running, I finish timing it by ear, RPMS, and using a timing light and a mark I made to try and use the notch in the balancer.

The TFI (ignition module)? Its fastened to the distributor with 2 screws. The electrical connection is several push in spades that point straight up toward the distributor cap. That's it. You're supposed to coat the contact area between the distributor and the module with silicone grease.
and worth the extra $ to drop in a whole distributor.
Great, so silicon grease is for the heat sink effect and
di-electric grease protects the electrical connectors?
I better get a new one beFORE mine goes out.

I hooked my timing light to my COIL wire to see if ANYthing was trying to fire at the alleged TDC and nothing was even close so I did exactly what you did except with a plastic drinking straw.
Instead of driving it with ever timing adjustment and aggravating the neighbors 30 times by ripping down the road, I'd just stand on the brakes
and step on the gas to listen for the ping.
It only pings now if I accelerate irresponsibly.
The only (other) odd thing is that I see no difference wwith the spout on or off, either driving or with a timing light.
At least we're all getting somewhere.
