Overdrive for my Dually
I own a 1992 F350 Dual Rear Wheel Crew Cab with a 460 gas engine. The standard rear axel ratio for this vehicle is a 4:10. The automatic transmission is an E4OD.
I purchased this truck new and over the years I have tired small adjustments to get better gas mileage from it. This includes a K&N airfilter, opening up the manifold intake runners, an MSD ignition module and coil, and a 3" exhaust from the headers back. I have a cap on the bed that is the same height as the cab.
These tweeks have improved highway mileage a small amount. 60% to 70% of the miles I drive are interstate highway lightly loaded in the bed. Once a year I tow an enclosed motorcycle trailer. I track my mileage and most trips average 10.7 mpg. With the increase in gas prices I am interested in making some changes that will increase my mileage.
One option is to change the rear end ratio to a 3:50 or 3:55 and I have the garage that services my truck looking into the cost.
Other opitions could be to change the computer chip. Does anyone make a chip that is designed to get better highway mileage?
Does anyone make an overdrive unit that could be added to the drive line to reduce engine rpm for cruising?
Can anyone help me on this?
