6.0 problems
First off I would appreciate any advice/suggestions and would like to thank the techs for all the info in here, I have learned a lot just from reading the tech folder and other posts.
I have a 2003 F250 6.0 4WD early model (May I believe).
Started having trouble with my truck a few months ago, while driving down the road it started running rough, started bucking and then just died. I got on here and did some research and tried to work on the truck myself, changed the ICP sensor and wiring harness and a few other things. I ended up realizing it was deeper than I wanted to go so I took it to a shop here in Macon Ga, they told me that my oil cooler was blown and I had a bad injector. We discussed doing and EGR delete, new oil cooler and changing the injector, at that time I asked if the heads were cracked and the mech said no. The next day I received a call from the shop and was told that when the mech went to change the injector there was water in there and that was an indication that the head was cracked. He suggested we remove the heads and have the pressure checked to confirm that they were cracked and replace them if confirmed. To replace the oil cooler and injector the cost was $2600, once the heads came into play that number went up to $7500 with the EGR delete. Now they came back and told me that the heads were not cracked but there was a seal that has to be pressed into the head for the injector that was messed up and needed to be replaced. I asked how much I was saving now that the heads did not need to be replaced and was told $1000 and that the shop would be getting a bill for around $800 from the machinist for the pressure check and the work on the seal. I called a machine shop and was told that there is an injector tube in that model years head but if it had been damaged it typically required new heads. The gentleman at the machine shop asked me what made me think my heads were cracked and I told him that when the injector was removed there was evidence of water, he told me that was an indicator of a blown oil cooler. Im thinking that the problem was misdiagnosed and the shop doesnt want to eat the cost of that. Does it sound like Im off on that? Should the mech have known that there could be water in the injector housng since he had already told me the oil cooler was blown? Is there anything to do with an injector seal/gasket/tube that would require the heads to be pulled and be replaced in the head? And should I expect the shop to eat the cost of the heads being pulled because of this error?
