I just purchased a 1958 Ford F100 with a '57 T-Bird 312 Engine. Looking at the engine on the drivers side up from the oil filter there is what looks like another type of filter with a pipe or type of exhaust comming out of it... When the engine is running oil can be seen dripping from it... What is this??
That's it.......so do I continue to let it drip oil or is there a way to seal it and ventilate the crankcase my other means...i.e. Crankcase filter.....
The part you refer to is supposed to have a filter inside. Take the top off and see what you have. It's probably old and gunked up or non existant. Either way replace it with a new filter and you should fix the problem. The top fits in a recess in the lower piece with a gasket between the two. Make sure this goes back together correctly or it will leak at the gasket, run down the tube and drip off the end and look like it's coming from inside. Putting a PCV valve in the pan under the intake manifold will allow you to block off the lower vent. I put one in mine just opposite the oil filler tube. You'll have to remove the intake manifold to get this pan off and make the modifications. You can also replace this pan with one from 292 or 312 truck which has a draft tube at the back. Either will work, the PVC is an environmentally better choice in my opinion.
I agree with the last post, but in addition, a PCV is also better for your engine in that it more effectively removes condensation from the crankcase area (and subsequently the rest of the engine). I've read where oil contamination is greatly reduced by the introduction of a PCV system (I believe my source to be the y-block series in Custom and Classic Trucks about 18 months ago.
I will try to link a picture of my 292 I built with a PCV valve installed in place of the road draft tube. If it does not work, check out my pic gallery. This shows the hose connection. The vacuum connection is near the front of the intake with an inline PCV valve. More pics in my gallery.
