Towing that much weight with a M5R2 and a 351w is probably not going to end well. How much torque does the 351w make? If it's much more than 275 I would stick with the T18.
My 95 F150 5.0l had a m5r2 in it and I wasn't real impressed with it. I put a few heavy loads of fire wood around 800-1,200lbs, skids about 700- 1,000lbs, and scrap metal 970lbs in it and it just didn't want to pull the truck down the road. As far as towing it pulled a small pop up camper 700-800lbs fine but refused to pull our 1 ton van 6,000lbs out of a mud hole without the aid of 4 wheel low and a snap tow. I was glad when it died and I put a ZF S542 in it's place which does everything I want it to do and more. It might work better behind a 351w but behind my 302 it sucked. I hope this helps.
i think the stock torque is 300+, thats why i wanted the 351 over the 302, which i also have but 302 is in trouble. and i was planning on running propane and bumping settings for smore power. maybe not the best idea huh.
what about just driving around putting lumber in bed? different load on trans?
The motor was half the problem I think. The gearing in the M5R2 isn't very good for towing, but the 302 just makes it worse. I towed everything you described and more with my 300/M5R2 F-150.
thats another concern, as far as i can tell ford never put the m5r2 behind the 351. i'm assuming for a good reason. maybe i should post to the market place.
