Hey guys, kinda new to this here. I gotta 89 bronco with a 5.8 351 efi. I finally got all the leaks fixed on the tranny, except front pump seal. my question is how do i know which tranny i've got? i mean where can i find the vin number because i don't know if its a 4 speed auto or 3 speed auto. I had a 88 ford f-150 ext cab 302 v8 efi that i built from scratch, but its a 2 wheel drive. this truck is my first 4 wheel drive and i've never been too knowledgeable with tranny's anyway. 4 wheel is much more complicated than 2. please if anyone can help me find the trans. vin i can figure it out from there. Thanks

Assuming you have a truck that still has the stock transmission, 1989 should still have the AOD but some got very early E4OD's. The E4OD is easily recognized by an overdrive cancel switch either on the dash on the end of the shift lever. Otherwise the AOD would have been the OEM automatic in the 89's. Either way, you are dealing with a 3-speed + overdrive. So, 4 forward gears: 1, 2, 3, OD.
