I finally got the pics from last weekend uploaded, and I just added captions. These 2 guys are planning on going to the trail ride near Little Rock in a week or 2 and wanted to test their trucks, but they wanted me along because they don't have a winch yet. Good idea - they needed it! Greg got stuck less than 300' off the pavement right at the trail head, and Dennis ended up on both bumpers on the way back out. After getting back on the road, he found he had thrown a rear coil out against the tire, so he's working on a mod to keep it in place before Little Rock. Greg just needs more aggressive tires, but I think Dennis is buying a winch today. Both are working on front receivers so they can share it.
From the factory:
V-8, 4 doors, 2 sunroofs, giant back door, fullsize spare on the same rim as the other 4, 2 solid axles, 9" of front travel, 11" of rear travel, 4-wheel disk brakes, coil springs at all 4 corners, lockable diff in the t-case, traction control ABS, 6-way power seats, A/C, and more cupholders than seats.
Land Rovers were wheelin' the world before the Bronco was even thought of.
How would I design the ultimate off road truck, brand new?
Super Duty drivetrain, a decent, big cube V8 (how about the Lightning version 5.4L), 6 speed trans, double reduction transfer case, 60 up front, 10.25 rear with selectable lockers and 4.10's. coil suspension (optional air suspension) Wrap it in a no frills body with a hoseable interior and few options and a removeable top and put it all in a 100- 104" wheelbase.
Yeah, we had a break in the rain of about 3-5 days and then it sprinkled the night before we hit the trail, so it was like driving in warm wax in the clearing just before the trail head. Then the first thing was to cross that little ditch, which used to be a creek bed before all the construction in the area rerouted much of the runoff. They should be getting back from Hot Springs anytime today, so I'll call them to see how they did. They managed to get front receivers on both trucks and bought a winch to share, and an old Jeep went with them, so I expect they had fun.
How would I design a off-road vehicle. Well it would have to be a ford, a 351 c.i.d. V8 bored .10 over- kicking out 350 H.P., 4.10 gears with detroit lockers front and rear, 6" suspension lift, 35" Mud-terrain tires, Borg warner transfer case with low reduction gearing, huge grill gaurd, and a E4OD-HD Transmission!!!
Oh wait That's my 1990 Bronco!! I guess it was already made.
P.S. In my honest opinion I would never buy let alone take a Land Rover off-road. That truck belongs on the gravel roads of Scottsdale, Arizona!!
