Unhappy Starts For A Second

I've got a 1986 F250 with a 460 reg old carb. The truck starts and seems to run strong for about 5 to 15 seconds. If you give it gas it revs up fine, then suddenly cuts out. No other odd behavior, just suddenly stop dead. I changed the fuel filter and the old one was still fine. Any ideas?

You need to find out what's giving out after 5-15sec; air (not likely), gasoline (possible), compression (not likely), or spark (possible). Those 4 are all it takes to make a gas engine run, so one or more of them is quitting, killing the engine.

These trucks run a "hot fuel" system with electric in tank pumps, It sounds to me like there's a problem in the normal run circut, there's a starter engaged bypass on the system, which is running on your truck as it starts. Look for a fuel pump inertia switch on the pass. side of the transmission hump under the dash(where it was on my 86) check the relay that's in the black plastic holder on the drivers side of the firewall, close to the fender, and, most importantly, check the fuses(I forget which the fuel pumps are on though.)
