Ottawaguy. Where did you get yours? I've had mine in at Kanata Ford a few times now for other issues where i have mentioned the rust (Which BTW now has full on started peeling open and i have full out rust i'd say 80% of the length of my hatch, along the underside of both DS doors and the PS rear door. In all 3 cases, they have stated that this is normal for a vehicle in our part of the country and that they only cover perforation...

Gimme a break. my wife's older matrix has no rust. My car prior to the escape (a VW) which i had for almost 9 years, had no rust......

And BTW, i agree with all your statements...

Gecko,
Found mine about a month ago at Southbank.
I'm a ford lover, but it's always been the trucks. There are a few things that I'm not impressed with on the Escape though, but it still beats driving a GM.

I was floored though when I discovered the rust...but It is in the very early stages and I will do what I can to stop/slow it down...don't trust bodyshops to get it right. In my opinion, they seldom do.

Your VW was likely not made with steel imported from China.....
Guess we can thank all the metal guys that pick through our trash for metal...China is buying up insane amounts of scrap metal.

I did noticed a couple of classic VW's in slowjack's sig..

What is the issue(s) with your transmission?

as for the previous posts, it's all good now
Cheers mate!

Erratic gear shifting
Very hard shifts
Complete vehicle stall when going into reverse
Very slow engage into reverse (5sec or more sometimes).
Shoots into a very high rev just prior to shifting from 2nd to 3 and / or 3rd to 4th.

It's quite common on the net with a few searches... FORD not willing to acknowledge.

I think my year (2009) was the first year of the 6 speed and hopefully for you, the problems have been worked out by 2011.

It's been this way since very very early on. Have had it in multiple times now. Won't acknowledge, typically they just flash computer, flush, etc..... Problem ALWAYS persists. Dealer is about 60KM from home and with work, kids, etc..... Not a convenience to have to go into the shop 1/week!!!!

Just to add...

If it was the metal, you'd have the rust presented in many other places IMO. For me (At least), it's all the seams.. This would then lead to a build process problem.

- Not properly sealed?
- Not properly tacked together (Metal sheets)?
- Who knows..

All i know is that i will now have to try and address myself (Planning on taking some small wire wheels to the seams and then coat it with POR15). Another winter and it'll surely spread into full out rot.

I did read about some tranny issues for sure...mostly about it just acting confused a lot of the time. So far none of the symptoms you describe..my biggest annoyance is what they call the death lag....you know when you slowing down in a turning lane waiting for a car to go by and then when you hit the gas....it's a second or two before the throttle kicks in. I miss the good ol' throttle cable.
Perhaps they had worked out the kinks by 2011....time will tell.
sorry to hear that yours is so wonky....
Most makers are slow to admit a problem, but at least fix the problems as they arise.

..on a side note, not sure if you are aware, but your holland link in your sig just brings a blank page for me.

I agree, but don't think the rust should progress so quickly in areas where they are not exposed to things that normally speed up rust..such as road salt.

Por15 will work for sure if it gets to the rust. I wonder if it comes in Sangria red metallic

Since all the rust I am experiencing is on the underside of the doors, i should be able to give the areas all a light sanding/cleaning and apply POR without it appearing on the exterior finish.. I know it will be black (That's the color i have) but at least it won't be seen under normal circumstances. Just when a door is open or the hatch is up.

Cheers,

Cheers,
You can always apply a coat of the body color over the POR.

It seems that most of you guys with rust issues are in the north where they salt the roads in winter. Except for one entry from GA.

I have a 2009 Escape bought in July 2009. It has 45K miles. It has no rust. But then, I live in Texas where we don't salt the roads.

The car is never garaged. I love my Escape. I wish it was a 6 cyl. but I llike the extra mileage the 4 cyl. gets and it has plenty of go when I need it.

yes sir....were up in the rust belt. maybe an hour north of Ogdensberg, NY
in the Ottawa area.
I well aware of the rust free life your trucks live down in the southern states.
So much easier to take care of a vehicle when bolts actually turn and don't have to be cut off.
..but how's the moose hunting down there??

Can you fit a moose into the Escape? I think I could fit a deer... Here in GA.

It may be that my hatch was replaced by a body shop, as the paint just looks a bit different to me, and there is no VIN tag like seemingly all the other panels have.
The way it rusted, from the inside of the crimp seam, makes me think that the coating was not there, or there was a missed step in coating the inside of the door panel, such that a preventive would have drooled down into the valley between the panels at the bottom. Used to was in the Midwest, IL, IN, OH, etc, that you could expect to have body rust within 3 or 4 years, and going more than that was exceptional. I saw many vehicles in Cleveland Ohio that had hanging bits of fender after a very short life. I rinsed the underside of my vehicle as soon as it was warm enough, but still had sheets of paint coming off the outer fender where stone chips, or salt?, had allowed corrosion to occur under the nearby paint. A one year old car needing refinishing after a Cleveland winter back in 1975. We've come a long way...

Naaa...got my pick up for that.
But you're right, I'm sure I could fit a deer in there.

You are likely right...a one year old vehicle should not have rust there, regardless of where it is.

I feel bad for you, we bought a brand new 2008 ford escape in 2008 and the paint peeled all along the roof and on the tailgate, we got rid of it asap because i knew it would rust out . The dealer told me peeling paint wasnt covered, to let it rust out then ford would replace the roof and tailgate. WTF.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rd-escape.html

Poor poor paint job from ford, it seems to be affecting lots of models and many many years also. Now the engine problem on the 13s as well... I bought japanese afterwards, 2 suvs, no problems to date. Enough said.

Angry Rust coming from bottom of rear hatch

I am probaly beating a dead horse but I have rust coming from the pinch seam at the bottom of the rear hatch . Has ford offered any solution to this problem . oh yes I should mention it is only ONE YEAR OLD 2012.

I LOVE THE TRUCK , BUT THIS MAY BE THE LAST FORD I WILL OWN, IF FORD DOES NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS ALSO BEST TO MENTION THAT I HAVE OWNED A AUTOBODY SHOP AND STILL PAINT ON THE SIDE .

AND IF ANY ONE FROM FORD MOTOR CO. IS FOLLOWING THIS BLOG I HAVE ONLY OWNED FORDS! FROM A 77 E150 SHOP TRUCK , ESCORT, TO EDDIE BAUER EXPIDITION, TAURUS , SVT FOCUS , SEL FOCUS 2012 , AND
LASTLY 2012 ESCAPE.

I HAVE INVESTED IN FORD LATELY , CAUSE FORD DID'T TAKE THE BAIL OUT. WAS THIS A MISTAKE?

SORRY TO VENT ON A GREAT BLOG SITE .

ON A GOOD NOTE I NOW HAVE A 47 COE IN THE SHOP TO START WORKING ON, THIS IS WHY I JOINED ..... BUT IF I HAVE I PROBLEM WITH THIS ESCAPE MAY BE I'LL PUT IN A DODGE ENGINE IN THE 47.
