1996 e40d

Ive got a 1990 250 with a 7.3 and a going south e40d. I am tryn to get a definite answer on whether or not an e40d from a 1996 truck with swap into my truck with out having to change the internal electronic parts from my tranny to the 96 tranny. Would the MLPS from that tranny work with my harness, since i have a new upgraded MLPS on my tranny?

Any information would be greatly appreciated and welcome.

thanks
james

thanks Phy

75three90, my budget is nill for this. would love to stick a stick in it but you cant find the parts around here for a very reasonable price. could slap in a 4 spd from the pick n pull but not real sure if what thatll run me. plus its my daily driver and i cant afford the down time.

I'm assuming the '96 truck that the tranny is coming from is a diesel...
An E4OD from a gas truck has a different bolt pattern, and will not bolt up to your IDI...

First problem is 1996 has no speedometer drive in the tail housing. Now if the truck is a 4wd, then it will have the speedometer cable and sensor in the transfer case and you're good to go.

For electronics, you will need to keep the solenoid body (part of the valve body) from your 1990 transmission, and swap it into the 1996 transmission otherwise you will damage the transmission controller. I'm not sure if the MLPS needs to be changed but doing so will do no harm.

No no no no no no no no no no no

The 460 big block uses a different bell housing pattern from the diesel and it will not bolt up in anyway to the diesel or vice verca. In some cases guys have adapted the holes on a 5 speed bellhousing but it won't work with an auto.

a lot of people think this is the case.

a.the diesel is not a ford engine like the gas 460.its made by navistar international corp.

b.even if the diesel were made by ford, look at their different bell housings.id bet ya anything, they would have designed the bell housing differently from the 460 also, so it wouldn't have worked either.that's ford for ya.lol.

James, so the transmission you're getting is from a '96 diesel 4x4 truck? That's the only way it will bolt up to what you have, anything else will not work for you. Also don't forget that you'll have to drop the transmission pan and swap out the solenoid pack with the one from your original E4OD, this is because the solenoid packs are different in design, and Ford even changed the harness connectors to reflect this in an attempt to prevent people mismatching PCMs and solenoid packs and frying stuff.

Well dangit man, I duno who bghnkinf250 is and what truck he pulled that transmission from, so that really tells me nothing about it, lol. But that post was more of an FYI than anything else, so when you go to pick up the transmission just double-check with the seller that it was a 4x4 diesel truck it came from...
