'52 F-1 302 C-6????????????//

I posted this in the 302cid section but not much response yet. Thought I might try here. Thank you.

Hello! I'm looking to see if there is going to be any problem or certain things I should look for in this scenerio.

My '52 F-1 Has a 302 with a C-6 transmission. I looked up the VIN on the motor and it is from '79 econoline. With that in mind I need to replace the transmission in it and I found one but need to know if it will work. The Trans I found is a 69-76 C-6 trans and it is for a 2WD like my truck. the picture of it looks exactly like the one I have but my concern is the year gap and if I would run in to an issue with the teeth that meet up with the engine. The trans I'm looking at is noted to be for a 302 and possibly a 351 windsor. I just would like some feedback or maybe point me in a direction to get the info to whether this trans will work on my motor or not!

Thanks!

You should be ok with the year difference. Ford changed the inbalance on 302/5.0L engines in 81/82. Both your harmonic balancer up front and the flex plate you want will be 28 oz. imbalance.

Only thing you'll have to watch for is to make sure you get the right size flexplate. There were both 157 tooth and 164 tooth fp's. Quick measurement across shows the small one to be approx 13.25" and the large one 14.25". The big one (164 tooth) won't fit in the bellhousing of the small one. And as far as I know, both can be had in 28 oz imbalance. This can be ordered from most parts supply houses.

If it is a C6 with the small bell pattern it's fairly rare so I'd snag it.

Thank you for the reply this is what i'm looking for. I am however going to ask a stupid question and I feel like and idiot asking but is the flex plate the piece between the bell housing and the motor?

Is there a way to measure any other part of the trans to verify. Only reason for asking is that the trans I need to replace is still in the truck and I'm going to look at this trans on sunday and I wont be able to pull it out by then.

Could I take measurements of the bolt distances on the houseing to also verify it.

Sorry for the stupid questions but, I dont want to by something that is not going to work.

I'm gonna see if I can post the pic I have of it.

Thanks!

Kind of a small picture but this is the trans I'm looking at. I figured out the flex plate. I'm an idiot!

No, the flexplate is the name for the flywheel used with an automatic transmission. The spacer plate between the back of the block and bellhousing you're referring to is called the block plate.

From outside, there's no way to tell what you need, that I know of. For the C6, they're both likely to be the 168 tooth count. My suggestion would be when you tell the guy you want his trans, tell him the deal must include the torque converter and flexplate. Or at the very least, count the teeth on the flexplate from the donor engine/trans after it's pulled before you take it home. Either way, it will work for your application.

Measure the top two mounting holes on the bell housing. The SB version is closer together than the FE /big block version. I forget the numbers but just measure the spacing on your engine I think it is around 6 5/16 VS 8 1/2" for the two.. I use my hand and know the diference when I hold my thumb against one hole and my little finger on the other I have a SB version. The Small block version will work with any small block and the 351 Cleveland.
