Wink Oiling Tip for 351/400M

I have a very nice casting number book on Ford Engines, that goes into great detail on every aspect of Ford's V8's from the last 50 years.

There's some interesting information there relating the oiling of the 351/400M engines. Apparently, the oiling system is lacking in that it doesnt sufficiently oil the last couple of Mains towards the rear of the block.

I know of fellows who swear by these engines, yet are resigned to putting new bearings in the bottom end every 50,000 miles or so, "just in case".

The way around this involves running a steel line out of the port for the oil pressure sending unit, and into a spot in the back of the block where a threaded plug currently exists.

The book isnt where i'm at currently, or i'd offer a more precise description of the procedure.

Can anyone else weigh in on the oiling situation with these engines, and the suitability of this quick fix? ?

JC

Oiling Tip for 351/400M

Craigwell,

YOu might want to ask this question in the 351m/400 forum. The oil problem has been discussed there probably a 100 times. I have 2 '77 351m in the trucks and both had the mains go bad on them at about 78,000 miles. I am still looking for some good advice on what to do with the engines.

I don't think you'll like what is said there about the external oil line. Most of these guys think it is a crock, and many of these guys race Clevelands/400s. As far as I'm concerned, if you aren't running a full-out engine, the stock set up is just fine, with maybe using an oil restrictor kit (Moroso). Many of these guys don't even use a high-volume oil pump; they use a stock unit with the higher-pressure spring. The controversial oiling problem supposedly doesn't show up until over 6500 RPMs, so the typical street engine should be OK. The 400 I have had 147,000 miles, and the bearings didn't even show copper. I've heard of guys going over 200,000 and more with 400s, so I don't know why some wear quickly, and others go forever. I guess it is just one of those things.

Oiling Tip for 351/400M

its all good...

i really would rather have a 390, as that was what was originally in my rig.. i'll work with what i have for now, but if I can find a 390 somewhere cheap, i'll grab it.

i do know a few fellows who swear by the 400 though, and i can live with it either way. if i dont have to worry about the oiling, i'd just as soon not rob myself of an oil pressure sending unit...
