I have a 73 power steering box to change over my 66 that leaks on bottom. Would a seal kit fix it or are there bearings or bushings that would cause the seal to leak? Would I be better off to buy a rebuilt box. Thats a lot more money but it might save trouble later.
I'm guessing you are converting a manual steer to power assist and the box you plan to use leaks? How am I doing? I always core these boxes whether they leak or not. I get a warrenty and know the box has been rebuilt. Or you can buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself. These boxes are so heavy, I just don't think its worth the risk without a warrenty. IMHO!
The ones that I have done did not have any bushing at the output shaft. The shaft just used the cast iron of the case. The seal kit is not hard to do, just have a shop manual handy to set the mesh load properly.
Thanks for the input. Getting the preload right without a manuel is another concern i'll check on a rebuilt unit tommorrow. I'm new to using this board although i have been looking at it for some time.Lots of ideas and info. Keep up the good work. William I am in your part of the country, in northwest Ga. I've got a long way to go on my truck, but it will be solid. I'll post pics when i get a chance.
ms, Advance Auto carries the seal kit. It has two seals in there to replace (one against the other). Once you get them in and the pittman arm back on it should be good as new.
