engineers spend 1000's of dollers and 1000's of hours designing engines. baseing many factors such as ignition timeing, mechanical and vacume advance curves, compression ratio, valve overlap, carb jetting, and spark plug size and heat range on the octane rateing of the fuel. ethonal burns cooler and at a different rate than gasoling wich throws every thing out the window. (or at least on the floor). also ethenol alchohol is very differnt to handle than gas and can cause older o-rings and rubber hoses to deteriorate when they come into contact with it in the fuel system. and last but not least. of all the stupid misguided well intentioned things the govermnent does to try to make things better this may be one of the dumbest. the point of adding ethonal to gas is supposed to "curb our dependence on forigen oil and reduce emmissions". burning your food in your gas tank is beyond stupid. 1/3 of the oil consumption in this country is used by our farming industry. much of it to make fertilizer. corn is hard on the ground. it takes a lot of fertilizer. by the time corn is grown, reaped. dryed(takes a lot of fire to do that part) trucked crushed mashed malted fermented then distilled(takes a lot of juice to boil the alchol out of it) then trucked to and dumped into the gas at the refinery it has been proven without a doubt that it takes far more gallons of fuel to perform this evolution than the gallons of ethenol you get. then what is the end benifit? worse fuel economy. fuel that is ruining your engine. and higher feed prices which result in higher beef milk and any other food which invlolves corn. drives me wild!
Please excuse a complete noob question.....but why would you not want to run ethanol?
There's several reasons, actually. Some of them are; the stuff is corrosive, and eats many materials found in carbs and fuel pumps, hoses, etc., in older vehicles causing runability problems. Then there's the fact that alcohol has a lower btu rating than gasoline, so it takes more fuel to achieve the same power. That equates to lower fuel mileage.
And then there's the fundamental issues that the goody-two-shoes green types don't like to talk about, such as we're taking productive food-growing land out of production to make fuel, creating higher food prices. Or how about the fact that it takes more fossil fuel to grow and process the corn then we get back in ethanol...

Oh now you're just being an old crank, Wayne -- don't confuse us with the facts!
The central fact is, farmers vote, and agri-business gets billions in subsidies, which are recycled into campaign contributions. It works for everyone but us.
this may be off topic but does any of you use lead in your gasoline engines....or lead additives???
By the way when there is hunting season here people like to harass hunters.
They bug you with questions like:"why do you kill those poor little animals?bla bla bla"....
All I tell them is:I don't kill them i use friendly darts that make them fall asleep......then i take them home and boil them alive to really taste their suffering!!!!!
Some leave me alone after that.

Reason: spelling
E10 also screws up some fuel systems, and is a complete waste of money. It is a problem in most marine fuel systems.
It's a completely subsidized fuel....... in that the actual cost of the alcohol is subsidized by taxpayers....... the actual cost of it in addition to the actual benefits that are in question.
The idea is great if it actually reduces smog, but they didn't consider that the farmers are using gasoline and diesel to produce it (they didn't consider the emissions and energy expended in producing the fuel.
It was a completely BS boondoggle to subsidize farmers.
It needs to stand on it's own in the free market and subsidies need to be ended.
I received this message in November 2010 regarding ethanol blend gasoline and corrosion.
I live in New Jersey and it seems that all the automotive gasoline is now mixed with ethanol.
I has some of the guys over the other day and I was showing them the progress on the truck and one of them brought up the topic of running leaded gas vs modern non leaded gas in the truck, It never dawned on me until then. do you guys run any additives in your fuel?
