When I replaced the factory AM-FM stereo radio in my '76
F350 supercab, Ranger XLT (many years ago), the installer cut the factory wires before the factory plug at the wiring harness connection. Now I'm trying to identify the pigtails left on the back of the radio. I'm sure the solid black is for power supply; I'm pretty sure the unit is grounded via the screw that attached the unit to the rear mounting/support bracket. There's a light blue/purple striped wire for illumination that's easily identifiable. The other 3 wires are obviously for the door speakers but since there are only two speakers, one of these wires must be for a ground/neg, lead that branched to the speakers. One of the 3 wires is twisted black and gray; one is a twisted orange and green, and the other is a twisted white and light blue. There is a warning in my shop manual not to power up the radio unless speakers are attached. I have a full set of the factory wiring diagrams, but the speaker wire colors are not specified. If anyone can ID the wires, please let me know. If I could identify which of the 3 "twisted" wires might be a ground, I can figure out which is right/left.
Hi Vettman, I have a 73-77? radio/8 track that I'm trying to put in my 79 truck but I'm not sure of the wiring connections. It has a round black tube 3/4'' round and 1 1/2 long and the wire is black also.Could this be the power wire? the other wires match your except there is a blue/red wire also.Any ideas, sounds like we have smiliar problems
Thanks for Coolcoupe
I have the OEM stereo radio, and the five wires are as follows:
solid black--power
blue with red stripe--dial light
black with gray dashes--ground
orange with green dashes--right speaker
white with green dashes--left speaker
Those are exactly the same coloured wires I have thanks for the info !!
Everything went smooth when I connected all the wires except the light for dials stay on even with the key off.I don't think it should stay on,maybe I'm something, did this happen to you? Thanks for now Coolcoupe
The dial light should be on the same circuit as the dash lights which are controlled by the headlight switch, i.e., they should light when you pull the **** out one position--to the parkinglight's on position.
