I am looking to replace the old bench seat in my 66. Does anyone have a suggestion for a fairly easy junk yard replacement. Buckets are preferred but a good bench would work as well. Some fabrication is expected.
I have a seat in very good condtion in my 63 F100. No rips or tears. I would like to change it to a seat that has shoulder belt type seat belts as part of the seat. I looks like there would be no easy way to install shoulder type seat belts in the truck. No place to anchor them. I think dodge trucks might have these types of seats. Has anyone done this kind of swap ? What would fit.
Andy, I think you are on to something with this idea. Some here have reinforced the sheet metal and added the three point belts and later model trucks have a place to mount these belts. I like the seat idea best. Let us know how this turns out.
I also had the big idea to gain three point belts by installing belt-in-seat seats in my 1966 F100 Step side. I found a nice set of leather 2000 Silverado seats with full power on both driver and passenger seats. What a PITA (fitting acronym). Even after taking off extra mounting hardware from the rails, the seats were way to high. I ended up channeling into the floor for the inboard rails of each seat. I had to notch the cab cross member and weld the channel into the notch. The channels are also welded to the rear cab cross member. Then I brazed the floor to the channels all the way around. The inboard rails now sit in the channels and the outboard rails mount above the floor close to where the original bench mounted. Oh, I had to remove the gas tank to get the seat back far enough. One problem with the GM seat system is that the portion for the sholder belt sticks straight up from the seat back where as the cab sides taper. This big **** interferes with the cab and limits the amount of rearward travel of the seat and/or any recline of the back. I've seen Dodge seats with the shoulder belts and I believe those seats taper a lot more then GMs. They would likely work better. Once I got it done, however, the Silverado seats sit great. Unfortunately, I have all these power features but can't use them as the seat needs to be full down and back as far as possible against the back of the cab. About all I can use is the power forward which will be handy to get stuff into or out of behind the seat since there is room back there without the tank. I also have the center console that fits nicely between the seats and that gives me a storage compartment and two cup holders.
Let me know if you try this. If I had to do it again, I'd re-upholster my old bench seat.
